Getting ready for lessons

How to prepare for your driving test

Useful test preparation builds safe, reliable decisions across different roads and conditions. Tell us what you need to practise and we can check a suitable lesson arrangement with one of our vetted instructors.

Know the test for your nation

In Great Britain, the car test includes an eyesight check, two vehicle-safety questions, general driving including independent driving, and one reversing exercise. Under current Northern Ireland DVA guidance, the car test includes an eyesight check, two safety questions, about 40 minutes of driving with an independent section, and a reversing exercise; an emergency stop may also be included. The test is scheduled to change from 1 April 2027, so check current DVA guidance if you will test on or after that date.

Practise decisions, not a memorised route

Work on moving off safely, observations, junctions, speed choice, following signs or directions, parking and the vehicle-safety checks. Ask your instructor to vary the practice so you can respond to unfamiliar instructions and traffic. Great Britain does not publish driving test routes, so trying to memorise a particular route is not a reliable preparation method.

Turn feedback into a short practice plan

After a lesson or mock test, note the decisions that need more attention and choose one or two for the next session. Ask for specific feedback about what you saw, when you acted and what you could do earlier. Leave room to repeat the skill in different conditions. For Northern Ireland Category B learners whose first provisional entitlement starts on or after 1 October 2026, check the current graduated licensing requirements, including the six-month learning period, Programme of Training and logbook, subject to stated exemptions and transition rules, before planning a test.

Arrange lessons around your needs

Tell us whether you want to focus on manoeuvres, independent driving, vehicle checks or confidence. We confirm pickup coverage, transmission, suitable dates and times, and price directly with one of our vetted instructors, then negotiate the best available rate. The offer is held for at least 24 hours. The search fee is paid upfront at £9.99 for up to 10 requested hours or £19.99 for 11 or more, plus optional £25 Priority; it is kept only if you accept. If no suitable offer is found by the agreed deadline or the final held offer expires unaccepted, we refund the full fee including Priority. Declining any offer closes the entire search and also brings a full refund. Pay lesson fees directly to your instructor on the day of each lesson; no advance lesson payment or deposit is required through this service.
