Getting ready for lessons

What to expect from your first driving lesson

Your first lesson is a chance to explain what you already know and agree a sensible starting point. We pair you with one of our vetted instructors and confirm the pickup, car type, time and price before you accept.

Check your licence and what to bring

Make sure you hold a valid provisional driving licence for the nation where you will learn. In Great Britain, learner cars display L plates; in Wales, D plates can also be used. Northern Ireland has its own learner rules. For Category B learners whose first provisional entitlement starts on or after 1 October 2026, the graduated driver licensing scheme includes a six-month learning period, a Programme of Training and a logbook, subject to stated exemptions and transition rules. If you wear glasses or contact lenses to meet your licence eyesight requirement, take them with you. Comfortable footwear helps you feel the pedals clearly.

Tell the instructor what would help

You do not need previous driving experience. Let the instructor know if you have driven before, what feels unfamiliar and what you would like explained before moving off. Agree the pickup and say whether you prefer manual or automatic tuition. You can ask how the lesson will start and how to pause if you need a question answered.

Start with a simple goal

The instructor can explain the car controls and safety checks, then choose a first task that suits your experience and the conditions. A useful aim might be understanding the cockpit checks, moving off and stopping, or getting comfortable with steering. At the end, ask what went well and what to focus on next time. There is no need to cover everything in one session.

Confirm the arrangement and payment

We check actual pickup coverage, preferred transmission, suitable dates and times, and lesson price directly with one of our vetted instructors. We negotiate the best available rate and hold the offer for at least 24 hours. The search fee is paid upfront at £9.99 for up to 10 requested hours or £19.99 for 11 or more, with optional £25 Priority; it is kept only if you accept. If no suitable offer is found by the agreed deadline, or the final held offer expires unaccepted, the full fee including Priority is refunded. Declining any offer closes the entire search and also brings a full refund. Pay lesson fees directly to your instructor on the day of each lesson; no advance lesson payment or deposit is required through this service.
